Abstract

around 1507 is a work of great quality, both in terms of the technical skill of the artists (carpenters and painters) involved in its making and in terms of the refinement of the theological message relayed by its iconography and epigraphical complements. The piece is composed of painted boards around the central figure of Christ on the Cross which show figures from the Old Testament with phylacteries inscribed with quotes from the Bible. These verses, most of which are recomposed, some truncated and others inverted, augment the Messianic meaning of the sacrifice of Christ, basing each episode from the Passion on a passage from the Old Testament.
