Abstract

life in the towns and villages of the Kingdom of Navarra between the XI and XV centuries. Firstly, the  development of XX-century historiography on the subject is appraised. Secondly, the article explains the distribution of each type of charter and its function (to regulate burgh communities, to created fortified towns to defend the borders, to repopulate certain areas, to regulate the duties of peasants, or to unify and simplify the levies they paid the king, etc.).
