Abstract

War. His first experiences of war took place in his hometown, Olite, during the War of Independence. He took part in the 1820-1823 war. Following the First Carlist War, he was banished until his return to Spain. He was the director of the Guardia Civil. His skills as a writer should be added to accounts of his military life. In Europe, his work on the figure of Zumalacárregui was considered an example to follow when it came to relating military campaigns. His military adroitness, his deftness when it came to dealing with subordinates and his oratory skills made him an extremely complete general when compared to other generals taking part in the First Carlist War.
