Abstract

After studying the musical background of the court of Carlos II of Navarre, this article gives a general overview of music in the epoch of Carlos III the Noble (1387-1425) in both the secular and the religious field. The author underlines the cultural and political significance of music in the court of Carlos III, a monarch who went to great lengths to recruit well-known musicians, particularly after 1397, when his political prestige in Europe was at stake. Fruit of the Navarran monarch’s interest in bestowing the music in his court with splendour was the creation of a significant Music Chapel, which reached its zenith between 1396 and 1403.
