Abstract

This article studies the circumstances surrounding the production of religious and secular music in Tafalla (Navarre) during the years in which Felipe Gorriti worked as chapelmaster as the Parish Church of Santa María (1859-1867). The town had a Music Chapel formed, at least, by the master, the choirboys, a bassoonist, a violinist and probably a tenor, in addition to the incumbents in the choir. The organ was restored at this time in line with the aesthetics of the latest Baroque instruments. Felipe Gorriti managed to organise a band, although it experienced funding problems. Theatrical activity boomed during this epoch and zarzuelas could be heard for the first time in the town. Dances and brass band music were organised for fairs...
