Abstract
Joaquín Gaztambide is remembered as the author of a number of successful zarzuelas during the restoration of the nineteenth-century zarzuela, but he also played an important part, together with Barbieri and Monasterio, in the creation of Spanish symphonism in the 19th century as orchestra conductor and founder of the Sociedad Española de Conciertos. This article reviews Gaztambide’s work as symphonic conductor of the morning concerts of the Teatro Español in 1849-1850, his concerts with the Sociedad Española de Conciertos in 1862 –as well as his role in the creation and dissolution of this institution’s orchestra– and his concerts with the Sociedad Española de Conciertos in 1868.
