Abstract

This article describes the economic strain placed on Navarra during the war of independence. On the one hand, the exactions of the French, and on the other, the supplies given to the Anglo-Spanish troops and the army of volunteers. The duties demanded by the French can be divided into three groups: contribuciones (taxes), empréstitos (loans) and requisas (requisitions). The French authorities also punished the population of  Navarra with multas (fines) in the form of money or in kind; another way of obtaining resources. As of 1810, the offensive of the voluntary forces increased and the French had to bring in new military contingents, which in turn needed to be kept.
