El alcalde perpetuo de Araquil frente a Roncesvalles ante el papa Paulo III (1547)
Abstract
A document dated Rome, 4th of May 1547 bears witness to Pope Paul III’s awarding the Vatican’s confirmation to an agreement and sentence that put an end to a lawsuit brought by Charles Eraso against the Monastery of Roncesvalles. The case concerned the ownership of the Axieta mill in the Valley of Araquil.
It is an original petition, none too frequently found among the documentation of Navarran monasteries. Its interest lies in the insight it offers on Papal Diplomacy and the basis it provides to evaluate the events and circumstances that explain the genesis of apostolic confirmation and its significance in procedural law.
