Abstract

As of the second half of the xi century, the supposed, age-old “bipolarity” church/castle came to be complemented by the appearance of both boroughs and Jewish quarters. After 1119, Jewish settlements concentrated around two axes in the Kingdom of Navarre: the “news lands” of the Ebro Valley, the communities of Tudela and its “albala”, and the urban refuges scattered along the Navarran road to Santiago. As a real link between these two congregations, one of Islamic and the other of clear Franco-Christian tradition, stand the communities of Navarre’s mid region of the Jewish community of Val de Funes.
