Abstract

During the First Carlist War, and as a result of Zumalacárregui’s victories, the diocese of the Bishop of Pamplona fell almost entirely (bar Pamplona, San Sebastian and some villages, mainly in the Navarran Rib-era region) into the hands of the new conquerors.
These then contended with the liberals in Madrid in order to get the allimportant support of the Vatican, finally achieving the Apostolic Delegation (total power) for the Bishop of Leon, Carlos’ right-hand man. Playing with this weighty  advantage, they dismantled to a large extent the traditional infrastructure of the Pamplona diocese, still based in the Navarran capital. Moreover, the Bishop of Leon organised a diocesan court in Estella which went a long way towards eclipsing the traditional court...
