Abstract

When, after many centuries of increasing, Navarra had reached its demographic maximum, towards 1340, starvation in 1346-1347 and Black Death were the end of half of the Navarrese population. Disease appeared very early in the kingdom, preceded by food difficulties –in may-june, in 1348– coming from de south of France. In few months, it had been extended throughout the kingdom, favoured by a dense population, the growers escape and temperature and damp conditions. Besides an awful human outflow in every area and social groups, the crisis promoted disorganisation in production, the salaries rising and the increasing of social strains, what forced monarchy to take part.
