Abstract

The issue of who the patron saint of Navarre should be was a question of much debate from the beginning of the XVII century until 1657, when Pope Alexander VII brought an end to the question by proclaiming Saint Fermin and Saint Francisco Javier patron saints of the old kingdom. The city council and the chapter from Pamplona Cathedral’s candidate was Saint Fermin, whereas the local government and the Jesuits proposed Saint Francisco Javier.
