Abstract

In 1844, five reredos were taken from the Monastery of Irache, which had been seized from and finally given up by the Benedictines in 1839, to the parish church of Dicastillo, gutted of its entire contents in the fire that took place that same year during the death throes of the first Carlist war. This study centres its attention on the two side reredos of San Veremundo and the Cross providing new documentary information. The first of the altars was commissioned out to the sculptor Juan III Imberto –who also created the main altarpiece at the monastery– and the painter Francisco de Astiz.
