Juan de Villarreal: tradición e innovación en la arquitectura navarra del siglo XVI
Abstract
Juan de Villarreal is one of the main master craftsmen of the Navarre Renaissance, and from his position as the viewer of church works of the diocese of Pamplona, he will give tracings and conditions of the major works carried out during the second half of the XVI century. He directed in a spectacular way the artistic evolution of the works from the purest late Gothic style towards the introduction of mannerism in the last third of the century. This progress lead him to introduce innovative formulas, not only in sculptoric decoration, but also in architecture, in which architectural theories of the Italian renaissance can be observed, but without abandoning the heritage of past centuries.
