Los vascones, Pompeyo y la fundación de Pompelo [The vascones, Pompey and the foundation of Pompelo]

Abstract
Pompelo was probably founded by Pompey the Great after the Sertorian war, in the years 72-71 BC. The foundation of the town should not be seen as the reward of the Roman general to the Vascones for their pretended alliance during the war, nor its name as a way to honour the imperator by some indigenous people. Rather, the foundation must be understood from the perspective of imposition of Roman rule, and as a way of Pompey to honour himself giving his name to an indigenous town.
