Abstract

Since the Reconquista, the muslims of Navarre, as happen in other iberian kingdoms, deliver tithes and first fruits to the Church due to the christians lands they plough. The resistence to pay those taxes, specially the first fruits, seems to be constant between the 12th and the 15th Century. At the end of the Middle Ages, the documentation reveals a reinforcement of this tax system in the moorish quarters which paid tithes to the Chapter of Tudela, both nobleman domains (Ablitas) and king domains (Tudela). This trend, common among the eclesiastical institutions and clear in other moorish quarters, is closely related to the interest in strengthening those sources of safe income, in response to the deterioration of the domains.
