Abstract

Recent studies of the Codex Calixtinus, compiled towards 1140-1160, point out that the story of Charlemaigne’s crossing the Pyrenees by Roncesvalles to end up in Galicia and the tomb of Santiago was written in Compostela at the end of the 11th century, and that the localization of this legendary joruney –the Guide of the pilgrim to Santiago de Compostela– dates from the years 1120-1130. These founding exts of the pilgrimage are contemporary with Kings Sancho Ramírez and Pedro i of Aragon, promoters of the way from the Somport or Roncesvalles to Logroño, through Puente la Reina; Pedro I was one of the patrons of the church of Santiago de Compostela, and his brother, Alfonso I el Batallador was Queen of...
