Abstract

Ferdinand el Católico justified the conquest of Navarre in 1512, and his heirs of the house of Austria did the same, but not with the same arguments. Kings Juan III  and Catherine I, and their daugther Juana de Albret and grandson Enrique de Borbón, demanded the return of his kingdom and the repair of damage received. The debate was at first a distinctly dynastic one: what family had the right to the throne? But with the passage of time and the wars between Spain and France, the controversy was complicated by other national and religious components. On the other hand, what happened moved to reflection in the Spanish Navarre and in the French Navarre, although in different ways. The distribution of Navarre between Spanish and French Monarchies caused a major debate between historians and publicists on both sides of the Pyrenees.
