Abstract

The twentieth century was decisive in terms of development of caring intellectually disable people. This communication aims to review the evolution happened at Special Education in Spain and especially in the region of Navarra and highlights the work of relevant professionals and institutions which have been aware of needs, have developed policies and concepts. Concepts such as «mental delay» or «handicap» have been superseded. Nowadays we speak about «intellectual disability», «special education needs». Definitively we have left exclusion practices to set off inclusive ones as a means to achieve better quality of live. Outstanding professionals, laws which aimed a shy attempt of protection and institutions that bet on training teachers as essential way for development went on. But current special education is based on their valuable work.
