Abstract

Examining patronage networks established by Sebastian de Eslava during his term as viceroy in the New Kingdom of Granada provides an starting point to the beginning of the analysis of the colonial viceregal courts of New Granada. These viceregal courts were key centers of colonial power. Studying its internal mechanisms and how viceroys and the colonial elites concurred and conflicted within them can help explaining the phenomenon of the expansion of state power in Spanish America.
