Abstract

The actual start of the Romanesque art in Navarre just followed the conquest of the Kingdom from 1529-1530. The opening of borders by Carlos V favored the arrival of a large number of French officials mainly from the northern regions such as Normandy and Picardy, who settled in villages of the Camino de Santiago. Their competences at both stone and wood works and effective organization of work in their studios, allowed them to be awarded works like choir stalls, altarpieces, fronts and cantilevers, and images of piety like lamentations over the entombment of Christ and Saints’ Burials. Still in the transition to Romanism since 1563 some Gallic carvers and assemblers stand out like Pierres Picart, Martin Gumet or Juan Imberto I.
