La escultura en Navarra en tiempos de Sancho el Fuerte (1194-1234) [Sculpture in Navarre during the reign of Sancho el Fuerte (1194-1234)]
Abstract
This paper reviews the situation of sculpture in Navarre during the reign of Sancho el Fuerte (1194-1234) and its sequels. It is articulated in three sections: The first one is devoted to monumental sculpture, represented by the door of the Judgment of the Cathedral of Tudela, which is studied by Aragonés from the iconographic point of view. The second section is devoted to funerary sculpture, focusing on the lying king’s figure preserved in Roncesvalles; its analysis is carried out by Fernández-Ladreda, on the basis of previous works –Dectot–. She insists on a key element often forgotten because it has usually disappeared: the polychromy, that probably gave the work a very different aspect. The same author signs also the third section, in which she examines the worship images: christs –Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Estella, Cizur Mayor, Caparroso, Pitillas and Torres del Río– and virgins –Tudela, Catalain and Artajona–.
