Abstract

The arrival of Joseph I to the Spanish throne and the Spanish War of Independence had a negative impact on the cultural heritage of Navarre. The King applied a legislation of ecclesiastical confiscations that abolished the male religious orders and converted their property into national assets. The process had an effect on forty-nine convents and monasteries. Meanwhile the war brought theft and looting of personal property, especially pieces of silver and liturgical ornaments, and even the burning of churches, chapels and houses. Finally the Cortes of Cádiz also developed a liberal legislation of ecclesiastical confiscations, but the return of Ferdinand VII interrupted it momentarily.
