Abstract

After Mélida’s fortified walls were built around 1200, they protected and kept its inhabitants all through the Middle Ages, although they were destroyed and the village conquered at least on two occasions. From the extant remains and the data gathered from different documents, a description of the castle and the walls is made on this paper as they were at the beginning of the 16th century, before their final destruction when Navarre was conquered in 1512. The aims are two – to make Mélida’s old fortified walls known and to contribute to the appreciation of today’s walls remnants which make an important part of our cultural heritage.
