Abstract

Mariano Arigita y Lasa was a Navarrese researcher active in the 1876-1936 period, a cultural moment ranging from the birth of the Asociacion Éuskara de Navarra and what would be the germ of the Príncipe de Viana Institution. This cultural, historical and literary renaissance is led by the Comisión de Monumentos Histórico-artísticos. Arigita, a historian along the same line as Leopold von Ranke, catholic but not fundamentalist, was connected with Campion’s and Iturralde y Suit’s historiographical approaches, and his work with that of Alesón’s and Moret’s. He deplores the union of Navarre to Castile, from a critical perspective, which saves him from falling into the anachronism of interpreting past from present.
