Abstract

The origins of the viceroyalty of Navarre can be traced back to the end of the fifteenth century and not to the beginning sixteenth century, as has been believed by the scientific community until now. Apart from this interesting new piece of information another that no less interesting novelty is the one related to the facts Navarre was the first stable viceroyalty within the Hispanic Kingdoms. The present study is a first approach to the origins of the viceroyalty in Navarre in which an analysis of diverse aspects of it is carried out (the power of the Government, the social status of the governors, documentary expedition models, salary, etc). The figure of the viceroy is compared to that of the governor- general and lieutenant-general and also to high government institutions both before and after the first viceroyalty of Navarre, in order to determine the similarities and differences between them.
