Nueva contribución al estudio del topónimo histórico Palma de la villa de San Adrián [A new contribution to the study of the historical place named «Palma» in San Adrián]
Abstract
In the 9th century we find in documents a toponym «Palma», probably of roman origin, which the arabic chroniclers consider a village and call «Balma». Later, in the middle of the 11th century, we find a document in Santa María la Real of Najera that refers to the «boat of Palma», «navigio de Palma». At the end of the 11th and beginning of the 12th century, several other documents gathered in the Libro redondo of the cathedral of Pamplona mention San Adrián de Palma, associated with the monastery, but never as a village; on the other hand, the village where it is located seems to have taken the arabic name Almonaster. Later, in the 13th century, we find San Adrián’s name associated to the village, but without the accompaniment of the toponym Palma, and Almonaster vanishes as a village name.
