Abstract
The paper aims to provide an overview on theory and practice of the audiences’ participation in art museums. This participation is such a wide concept that it was defined, for the purposes of this article, as a bidirectional relationship between the institution and its visitors, which benefits both of them beyond the participatory activities related to education and/or entertainment. The article has two main parts. In the first one, both international and Spanish literature are analysed to show that this subject is a current, complex and relevant one. In the second, it has been explored how theory applies in practice to a navarrian museum.
