Abstract

Three groups of sculptors worked in San Pedro ad Vincula of Echano: the socalled Valdorba workshop, Leodegarius’s workshop, and an enigmatic group of sculptors who decorated the north portal and the capitals of the western transverse arch and also worked in the church of Sarbazan (Landes). In Sarbazan, Echano and also in Saint-Aubin, Daniel in the lion’s den is represented together with individuals who may be donors. The Daniel episode might be included as part of an iconographic program related to the opposition between earthly and divine judgment. In Echano there is a convergence of local and foreign trends, which derive from both the main artistic centers of Navarra and from more remote regions.
