Abstract

The large number of Roman inscriptions from the current land of Navarre is divided irregularly throughout its territory. Most of the testimony is concentrated in the Central regions, and testimonies near the Pyrenees and the Ebro River are scarce. A large part of the inscriptions are votive altars but there are funerary stelae, and fewer blocks which formed part of funerary monuments. Many of the testimonies are ceramic graffiti after cooking that allow measuring the penetration of the Epigraphic habit in different social groups. The chronology of the evidence shows that the use of Latin for the written expression did not arrive until beginning of the Principate.
