Abstract

This paper presents the main lines of the institutional development of the Navarrese priory of the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem between 1274 and 1328. The Capetian court regime, installed in Navarre following the death of the last monarch of the House of Champagne, entailed the deployment of a rigid apparatus of royal authority and control. The documentary texts confirm that this shift in governing model and personnel managed to influence the Sanjuanist institution, with an evident influx of French-origin priors who were well able to act in harmony with the new political environment.
