Abstract

The purpose of this article is to note how the Navarre sixteenth-century merchants joined in early to European and transatlantic trade, at that time centered in Flanders and Italy. After the conquest of Navarre and the kingdom’s inclusion to Castile in 1515, commercial companies with clear family roots were established. With these companies, besides a substantial enrichment, Navarre and all the Middle Ebro Valley were stocked with many products, some of which were considered of first necessity and others who could be qualified as luxury. On the other hand, this study is a contribution to a topic little discussed in this century in Navarre, such as trading companies been founded in our land, who operated in Europe and the relationship established between all partners, based on personal ties and business.
