Abstract

During the Eighteenth century an important bourgeoisie was developed in Navarra, formed by businessmen and merchants who, thanks to the economic might attained, were able to have access to the noble estate. To perpetuate themselves in that estate required the emulation of the long-standing nobility in their uses and customs. This brought about, among other aspects, sumptuous consumption and to build o to buy a big residence which should be embellished and adorned luxuriously, like the image of their lineage and the most visible external sign of it. It became for this social group an obligation imposed by their new status. Vidarte family, a rich clan of wool exporters to France, can be seen as an example of this process.
