Abstract

The painter Salustiano Asenjo Arozarena was born in Pamplona in 1834 and passed away in Valencia in 1897. At an early age, he moved with his family to Valencia, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos. He later became a teacher there and went on to be appointed director in 1871. This study offers a biographical snapshot, directed at setting the painter in his period. Secondly, we take a closer look at the style of his work, through his oil paintings, organising the production into thematic areas: portraits, historical paintings, paintings depicting customs, and scenery. We also analyse his drawings and mention his work as a satirical cartoonist and illustrator. We contribute some thirty works...
