Abstract

The economic changes imposed by “Illustrated Despotism” favoured the centralisation of power and the gradual suppression of the measures which prevented the single mar ket. The customs service of the Kingdom of Navarra on the Ebro represented a differ entiation of a political-institutional nature, an obstacle to trading relations and a focus point for smuggling. Its transfer from the Ebro to the Pyrenees was a point of conflict between institutions, as well as in the heart of the kingdom of Navarra, as can be seen from the continuous debates in its Courts.
