El Gótico preclásico en Navarra: arquitectura en tiempos de Sancho el Fuerte

The reign of Sancho el Fuerte (1194-1234) spans no less than forty years in the history of architecture in Navarre. For at least two generations of masons and master builders, urban parishes and a few important monasteries compete to carry out projects –often extravagant– which had sprung from the building frenzy that the kingdom lived during the last third of the XIIth century. Although the basic forms of the classic gothic style were introduced during his kingdom, the rest of the constructions were completed following a local building tradition that will evolve towards pre-classical gothic formulae. A structural gothic style that shares many of its features with buildings all over Christian southwestern Europe. The abbey churches of Irache and La Oliva, and the cathedral of Tudela itself, are good testimony of a tradition that will be superseded by the massive arrival of classical gothic elements and structures.
