Hacia una periodización de la fragmentación del euskera occidental [Towards a periodization of the dialectal fragmentation of Western Basque]
Abstract
In this article, the author proposes a relative periodization for the fragmentation of Western Basque, mainly based on the criterion of variability or multiplicity of forms. Specifically, after selecting a sample of the most representative features ofWestern Basque, he looks at the degree of variability of each of those features; that is, examines whether they have documented variants or not and, if so, of what kind.This way, he distinguishes four periods within the time-cycle at issue, which would go from the beginning of the dialectal fragmentation (VI-VII c.) until the generalization of written attestation (XVI-XVII c.).
