Abstract

This is a small part of the history of the houses in Etxalar since the XVII century. In the XVII century, there were 134 houses in the urban nucleus and 28 spread over the neighbouring mountainside. This number subsequently increased, in line with population growth, in different places and different ways. Isolated houses grew the most in number over the XVIII and XIX centuries: the 28 farms in the previous century rose to 160. Little building took place in the urban nucleus over this period. A good number of houses, however, were done up and rebuilt. The XX century saw a new circumstance: farms and farmhands started working in industry and new houses were built in the urban centre, isolated farms being gradually abandoned. Everything would seem to indicate that this trend shall continue in the XXI century.
