Irañetako euskara

Abstract

Following the path taken in several articles (Bakaikuko hizkera, Lizarragabengoko euskara) from previous years, the Basque language used in Irañeta is now to be studied. Irañeta currently represents the easternmost border of the area in which the local version of the Basque language from the Valley of Sakana is maintained, the last remaining speaker from the next village, Ihabar, having died some years ago. Unfortunately, the Basque of Irañeta is none too healthy either, it being kept alive by just five or six speakers. For this reason and because doubtlessly over the next few years we shall lose the sound of this speech, I have tried to isolate its main characteristics in the present article.
