Abstract

This study analyses the main characteristics of the stress system used in the Basque spoken in Lejona. The Lejona stress system lies on the border of the area of north Biscayan pitch stress varieties. The general rules of stress are set out using the characteristics of nouns, adjectives and verb participles as a basis. The main differences between stressed and unstressed morphemes are analysed and derivation and inflection suffixes have been divided up in line with these two criteria. One of the sections also looks into stress in compounds. These compounds are always stressed and, in most cases, the stress is assigned via a set rule. Finally, the Lejona system is compared with those from Getxo-Gernika and Arratia.
