Antroponimia vasca en la documentación de Santo Domingo de la Calzada (La Rioja) de los siglos XII y XIII
Abstract
Mediaeval Riojan archives, and particularly those from Santo Domingo de la Calzada, contain various toponymic and anthroponymic references of an undeniably Basque character.
Anthroponyms of this kind from diplomas dating from the XII and XIII centuries related to the Santo Domingo de la Calzada district are analysed in this study. The etymological formation and dissemination of the first names, surnames and nicknames in Basque, or influenced by the Basque phonetic system, supplied by eighty-two people are investigated; the study also offers new data as to the presence of Basque settlers in the western part of the mediaeval La Rioja and about which localities have the greatest density of references. The conclusion is that these are re-settlers who arrived in two stages, between the IX and the XI centuries, from the west of the Basque Country.
