Abstract

This study presents the different theories voiced as to the presence of the Basque language in the “Encartaciones de Bizkaia” (Basque region) and the widely debated subject of its translation to Castilian. The author demonstrates through documented examples of both translation and alteration that this translation, whilst failing to be a common factor throughout the area, did take place. Beyond this, whilst other toponymic works fail to exist, the scope of this phenomenon in the territory cannot be assessed.
