In 1998, Pope John Paul II convened an international conference in the Vatican to address those major contentious issues in which the Catholic Church has found itself embroiled over history. Gustav Henningsen was invited to expound on one of these subjects: witchcraft. His paper is one of the best summaries of the history of witchcraft, which imposes no geographical or chronological limits, and does not skimp on bibliographical
