Goya investigado por la Inquisición: la censura de los Caprichos en 1804 [Goya under the Inquisition: the censorship of the Caprichos in 1804]
Abstract
This article presents an unpublished document that shows that the series known as the Caprices, by Goya, was investigated by the Tribunal of the Inquisition of Toledo in 1804. It should be noted that this process took place just a year after Goya relinquished his work to the Crown, when the Caprices were sold at the Royal Chalcography. Despite the fact that the file is incomplete today, it seems that the process brought no negative
consequences for Goya, probably thanks to the intervention of the king Charles IV, the secretary of State Manuel Godoy or the archbishop of Toledo, cardinal Luis María de Borbón.
