The rebellious jesuit of Sangüesa: Francisco Javier Mariátegui
Abstract
The Paraguayan cast-off jesuit Francisco Javier Mariátegui (Sangüesa, 1741- after 1812, Majorca?), somebody wholly sunk into oblivion, this notwithstanding is worth being remembered in the history of jesuitism because of his constant and brave vindication of honour of the abolished Society of Jesus, in the presence of Campomanes (1785, demanding the returning of the Society) and after that, facing Godoy (1797), provoking the coming back of a lot of jesuits between 1797 and 1801, and before the Cádiz Cortes (1812) asking for the first time in printed paper, the revocation of any antijesuitical legislation from the Bourbons and an impartial judgement. He also presented an outline of his constitutional project to the Central Junta from Seville in 1809.
