The “Estudio de Gramática” in Viana
Abstract
This article covers the history of the “Estudio de Gramática” in Viana from its foundation by the municipality in the XVI century to its forced disappearance in the XVI century. Many preceptors, often priests, were hired to teach over this time. The public entrance examination system was frequently employed, the nobility desiring a good education for their children which would allow them to enter priesthood or university. The classrooms of the “Estudio” were almost always located in rooms in the castle. The article looks into the relationships between masters and their pupils, the school calendar and timetable, the lessons taught and the texts used. The regulations of the “Estudio” and some other important documents are included.
