Arquitectura civil y desarrollo urbanístico: el caso de Tafalla en el Antiguo Régimen

Abstract

A walk through Tafalla’s streets reveals the marks of history on her urban landscape and civil architecture. The city’s medieval origin is particularly evident in La Peña, the early center of the site, which developed around a defensive castle in Santa Lucía hill. The town experienced its golden age in the Middle Ages, when Carlos III decided to build a new royal palace, a decision which prompted the beginning of a medieval urban expansion area. From the last years of sixteenth century and the following centuries, Tafalla grew beyond its walls, thanks to the monasteries built by the Capuchin monks and the Franciscan Conceptionists, the homes constructed by several families (such as the Mencos, Recart de Landívar, and Vega)...
