Abstract

The arrival of the first Evreux, Juana II and Felipe III, in Navarra was to highlight two different ways of understanding power: the one which the King and Queen understood as a result of their French education and the one which had been developed in Navarra for more than a century based on the theoretical pact between King and the kingdom. The second of these was significantly reflected in the ceremony of the regal oath, catered for in the Fuero General. For a King and Queen of Capet origin with a teleological vision of their power, however, it was not possible to ditch certain symbolic elements on accessing the throne, i.e. when they were proclaimed monarchs.
