Abstract

Having committed a crime in Pamplona’s Calle Tejería de Pamplona in April 1742, the young Miguel Fermín Aguirre decided to seek sanctuary in the church of the Capuchin convent in the outskirts of the city, hoping that he would be granted local ecclesiastic immunity.
This decision, which should not at first necessarily affect relations between civil and diocesan justice, led to an unthinkably deep conflict between the two jurisdictions, the highest civil and diocesan authorities losing control of the  situation. The conflict reached such a level that the maximum diocesan authorities released an order of excommunication against the highest judicial and political authorities in the Kingdom of Navarra, the spectre of an interdict even  rearing its head; the civil authorities...
