Música y músicos navarros en el Nuevo Mundo: algunos ejemplos mexicanos (siglos XVII-XIX)
Abstract
Musical exchanges between Navarre and the New World during the viceroyal period have to date passed almost unnoticed and no specific study of the subject exists. This article presents a first approach to the subject as based on material found in different Mexican archives and demonstrates the constant presence of Navarran music and musicians on the other side of the Atlantic during the colonial period. As a musical appendix, it includes the transcription of a hitherto unknown villancico preserved in Mexico: Yo no lo alcanzo, composed by Andrés de Escaregui, chapelmaster at Pamplona Cathedral from 1738 to 1773 and one of Navarra’s most important 18th-century musicians.
